What a random act of kindness can do

Listen to internet radio with Maria Rodgers ORourke on BlogTalkRadio

Yesterday, I tried a random act of kindness by taking flowers to a meeting. I’d had my doubts about the meeting beforehand, but the inspiration for the gift and the giving itself transformed the experience. When the inspiration came, I felt the anxiety lift. My wishes for some emergency to force a cancellation gave way to calm anticipation.

When I arrived the folks were so genuinely surprised and grateful. It really warmed my heart to know that such a simple act had such a wonderful effect. Our meeting was warm and gracious. I’m sure the folks around the table are this way quite often, but perhaps the simple beauty of the flowers helped bring us to our best selves for a time.

From this experience I take with me greater courage to trust this kind of inspiration, and greater wisdom to sort through my own gremlins that might persuade me otherwise. May I be influenced by, as Abraham Lincoln called them, “the better angels of [my] nature.”

So I invite you today to look for those opportunities to be influenced by those better angels, and to have the courage to take a chance and step out with them, because you never know how you might touch someone’s heart or bring about a better day.
