Take the long way, or a different way, home

I want to share with you a moment yesterday when I was successful at paying attention to life. My daughter and I were leaving the Y after a workout, and the building sits on a hill. I usually take the same entrance in and out of the parking lot, but I parked at a different end and went out a different way. As it happened, we were driving west and saw the most amazing sunset, the final colors. It was the most vibrant magenta I’ve ever seen.

My daughter spontaneously said, “Hey, let’s go to the park!” I said, “Great!” and we took a right and drove to the park and down to the lake and we got to see the sunset in all of its glory.  Not only did we get to see the beautiful colors, but we ran into two dear friends who were there for the same reason. We hadn’t planned to meet there, of course, but spontaneously ran into each other and shared hugs and laughs and the end of the colors as they disappeared from the sky.

That to me was a moment when I was able to pay attention to life, because two different things happened that were important to bring about that whole moment of beauty and serendipity. One, I took a different path, I took a different turn than I usually take. If I’d taken my usual route, I’d have gone down to the bottom of that hill and never seen the colors of the sunset. Also, to have the time to take the different path. When my daughter said, “Let’s go to the park,” it flashed through my head: “Homework? What else do we have to do at home?” I was able to set that aside, it was early enough in the evening, and I thought: “You know what? We can get to those things, but let’s take advantage of this beautiful moment now.”

I share this with you as my testimonial to inspire you to take a different path today. Or, look for ways you can loosen up your schedule a little bit so you can be open to these spontaneous moments of beauty. And you never know how you’ll be rewarded.

So, what do you say? Let’s notice together the blessings of life. When we do, marvelous things happen. Let’s live Everyday Inspired!
