Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing that some have entertained angels without knowing it. Hebrews 13:2
The kind stranger sitting next to me would be a dear friend by the end of the day.
Yesterday I sat in a booth at a trade show next to the cashier. Her daughter-in-law was one of the event chairs. We chatted on and off throughout the day. She took an interest in my book and bought the only one I’d sell that day.
As we talked pieces of her story unfolded: how supportive her family and church had been when her husband died suddenly earlier this year; how together she and her husband had built a successful business that now provides a good livelihood to many wonderful employees; and the full recovery she’s experienced from a serious injury to her arm years ago. “No pain, no gain!” she explained, her eyes twinkling with delight remembering the therapist who saw her through her rehab.
In a matter of hours, the stranger beside me was transformed into a witness to me of love, strength and joy. My blessing for the day didn’t come in book sales, but in the happy coincidence of sitting next to a delighful woman. How blessed I am to happen to sit beside her.
